Bill Fish, Head Professional:
As a Long Island native I found myself in the golf world thanks mainly to my grandfather. He was the first person to take me to the driving range and eventually on to the golf course. I was born in Port Jefferson and attended grade school at Longwood High School. There I played many sports but ended up taking golf quite seriously. As the captain we won many league championships. I ended up playing collegiate golf while attending Hofstra University on a golf scholarship. As a junior golfer I worked the driving range at West Sayville Golf Club, and always had a passion to run a country club.
I soon entered the golf business as a young adult at Marriott Wind Watch in Hauppauge. The club was then purchased by Hamlet as it is known today. In my eight years at Wind Watch I had many roles. My duties included merchandising, staff management, tournament operations, budgeting. Not to mention assisting John Jacobs and Nicklaus Flick golf schools, conducting several private lessons as well as large and small clinics. Now in my fourth year at Islands End, I have found a unique opportunity to further promote the game of golf in several different capacities at an extremely beautiful golf course. Today my day includes, setting up member events, golf outings, merchandising and conducting private and group lessons.
There is a great feeling shared when a student of the game (seasoned or beginner) understands and feels the swing groove in the right direction. This can be achieved by communicating to the student as an individual in an attempt to tap into their abilities.
Edward J. Burfeindt, PGA Professional:
I was born and raised in Glen Cove, New York. I have been in the golf business for 15 years, and was elected to the PGA Membership in August 2004. My first professional job was at Glen Cove Country Club where I spent 8 years. I have also worked at Middle Bay Country Club, North Shore Country Club, and now here at Island's End Golf & Country Club (last 4 years).
I enjoy teaching the game of golf to players of all skill levels. I believe that each student will have his or her own unique swing and learning style. You cannot teach one particular way to every student. As a golf professional, I look at each student individually and try to build on his or her strengths. The student should feel comfortable and undrestand the ideas I am trying to convey. I think the teaching environment plays a big part in a student's development.
